Massive Growth for Needle Coke Industry Petroleum coke , abbreviated coke or petroleum coke, is a final solid material rich in carbon that is derived from petroleum refining and is a type of the group of fuels called cokes. Petcoke is coke that, in particular, is derived from a final cracking process, a thermo-based chemical engineering process that splits long-chain petroleum hydrocarbons into shorter chains, which takes place in units called coking units. Put succinctly, coke is the "carbonization product of high-boiling hydrocarbon fractions obtained in the processing of petroleum (heavy residues)". Petroleum coke is also produced in the production of synthetic crude oil (syncrude) from bitumen extracted from the oil sands of Canada and the Orinoco oil sands in Venezuela.
