Petroleum coke, abbreviated coke or petroleum coke, is a final solid material rich in carbon that is derived from petroleum refining and is a type of the group of fuels called cokes. Petcoke is coke that, in particular, is derived from a final cracking process, a thermo-based chemical engineering process that splits long-chain petroleum hydrocarbons into shorter chains, which takes place in units called coking units. The calcined petroleum coke can be further processed in an anode firing furnace to produce anode coke of the desired shape and physical properties. Anodes are used primarily in the aluminum and steel industry.
