Flourishing demand for Wi-Fi Booster Industry

A wireless repeater (also known as a wireless range extender) is a device that takes an existing signal from a wireless router or wireless access point and retransmits it to create a second network. When two or more hosts need to be connected using the IEEE 802.11 protocol and the distance is too great to connect directly, a wireless repeater is used to fill the gap. It can be a special stand-alone computer network device. Some WNICs (Wireless Network Interface Controllers) optionally support operation in such a mode. These outsides of the primary network can connect over the new "repeating" network. In relation to the original router or access point, however, only the repeater MAC is connected, so security functions must be activated on the wireless repeater. Wireless repeaters are commonly used to improve signal range and strength in homes and small offices.

Leading players of Wi-Fi Booster Industry:

NETGEAR, Alcatel-Lucent S.A., Aruba Networks (Hewlett Packard Enterprise Development LP), D-Link Corporation, Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd, Juniper Networks, Inc., Linksys, Motorola Solutions, Inc., Ruckus Wireless, Inc., TP-Link Corporation Limited

Uses:

  • If there is no WiFi hotspot in an area
  • In an area with many disturbances.
  • Interference can be caused by many environmental factors, such as microwaves (such as from a microwave oven), metal appliances or coatings, or an impaired line of sight.
  • When the computer and the wireless access point or wireless router are too far away for the internal wireless network interface card to receive the wireless signal.
  • When networked in an interference environment with multiple computers, networks, or hubs

Drawbacks :

Since only one wireless device can transmit at the same time, the wireless transmissions are doubled (router to repeater and then repeater to client compared to only router to client).
  • The wireless throughput is reduced by at least 50%.
  • Wireless interference (e.g. with other networks on the same channel) is at least doubled.
  • May open another security attack vector. Older devices do not always support WPA2-PSK. While the original network might be secure, the secondary might be open.
