A surgical mask, also known as a medical face mask, is intended to be worn by health professionals during medical procedures. Surgical masks are designed to prevent infection in patients and treatment staff by trapping bacteria that are found in liquid droplets and aerosols from the wearer's mouth and nose. They are not intended to protect the wearer from breathing in bacteria or viruses in the air, the particles of which are smaller, but can provide protection as viruses are filtered out on droplets. There is overwhelming evidence that surgical masks protect both the wearer and those in the vicinity of the wearer from the spread of viruses.

Surgical masks were originally designed to protect medical personnel from splashes or sprays of body fluids. However, the effectiveness of surgical masks against flu-like infections has not been confirmed by high quality randomized controlled trials. Surgical masks vary depending on the quality and level of protection. Despite their name, not all surgical masks are suitable for use during surgery. Surgical masks can be labeled as surgical, insulating, dental, or medical intervention masks. Chinese health officials differentiate between medical (non-surgical) and surgical masks.

Surgical masks consist of a non-woven fabric that is manufactured using a meltblown process. They came into use in the 1960s and largely replaced the fabric face masks in industrialized countries. The dark blue (or green) side of the mask (the liquid-repellent layer) must be worn on the outside, the white (absorbent) layer is on the inside. With respect to some infections, like influenza, surgical masks can be as effective (or ineffective) as respirators such as N95 or FFP masks. However, due to their material, their shape and their tight seal, the latter offer better protection for laboratory experiments.
