Alternative data sets are often categorized as big data [8], which means that they can be very large and complex and often cannot be processed by software that has traditionally been used to store or process data such as Microsoft Excel. An alternate dataset can be compiled from a variety of sources such as financial transactions, sensors, mobile devices, satellites, public records, and the Internet. Alternative data can be compared to data traditionally used by investment firms, e.g. B. Investor presentations, SEC filings and press releases. These examples of “traditional data” are created directly by the company itself.

Because alternative data sets are created as a product of a company's business, these data sets are often less accessible and less structured than traditional data sources.
