Astonishing Growth in Artificial Heart and Assist Devices Industry

An artificial heart is a device that replaces the heart. Artificial hearts are typically used to bridge the gap before a heart transplant or to permanently replace the heart if a heart transplant is impossible. Although other similar inventions preceded it from the late 1940s, the first artificial heart to be successfully implanted in a human was the 1982 Jarvik-7, designed by a team of Willem Johan Kolff and Robert Jarvik.

BiVACOR, SynCardia, Jarvik Heart, CARMAT, AbioMed, LivaNova (Sorin), Getinge (Maquet), Medtronic, Terumo CV Group, Braile Biomedica, Tianjin Medical

An artificial heart is different from a ventricular assist device (VAD), which is designed to assist with heart failure. It is also different from a cardiopulmonary bypass machine, which is an external device that provides the functions of the heart and lungs. It is only used for a few hours at a time, most commonly during heart surgery.

A synthetic lung replacement remains a long-awaited "holy grail" in modern medicine. The obvious benefit of having a functioning artificial heart would be to reduce the need for lung transplants as the demand for organs always greatly outweighs supply.
