A muffler, silencer, or sound moderator, is a muzzle device that reduces the acoustic intensity of the muzzle report and the recoil when unloading a weapon by modulating the speed and pressure of the propellant gas from the muzzle, thereby suppressing the muzzle explosion. Like other muzzle devices, a muffler can be a detachable accessory that is separately attached to the muzzle, or it can be an integral part of the barrel.

A typical silencer is a metal cylinder with internal baffles and a hollow bore to allow the projectile to exit normally. While firing, the bullet will fly unhindered through the bore, but most of the expanding gas expulsion behind it will be retained via a longer and tortuous escape route created by the baffles, increasing the release time. This slows down the gas and diverts its kinetic energy to a larger surface, reducing the beam intensity and thus reducing the volume.

Silencers can also reduce recoil while firing. Unlike a muzzle brake or recoil compensator, which reduce recoil by directing the muzzle shock sideways, mufflers release almost all of the gases forward. However, the inner baffles significantly increase the time of gas release and therefore reduce the reverse thrust generated - as with the same impulse, the force is inversely proportional to time. The weight of the muffler itself and the leverage of its mounting location also help to counteract the lifting of the muzzle.
