Qualitative Study on Arthroscopy Industry

Arthroscopy (also known as arthroscopic or keyhole surgery) is minimally invasive surgery on a joint that involves examining and sometimes treating damage with an arthroscope, an endoscope inserted through a small incision in the joint. Arthroscopic procedures can be performed during ACL reconstruction.

The advantage over conventional open surgery is that the joint does not have to be fully opened. Only two small incisions are made for knee arthroscopy, one for the arthroscope and one for the surgical instruments to be used in the knee cavity. This shortens the recovery time and can increase the success rate due to less trauma to the connective tissue. It has gained popularity due to the evidence of faster recovery times with fewer scarring due to the smaller incisions. Irrigation fluid (most commonly "normal" saline) is used to stretch the joint and create an operating room.

The surgical instruments are smaller than conventional instruments. Surgeons view the joint area on a video monitor and can diagnose and repair torn joint tissue such as ligaments. It is technically possible to examine almost any joint arthroscopically, but it is most commonly used for the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle, foot, and hip.
