Corks are made for both still and sparkling wines. The latter are filled under pressure, which means that the corks take on the shape of a mushroom. They are held in place with a wire cage known as a muselet.

Natural wine corks, like other cork products, are made from the bark of cork oaks. The bark is carefully peeled off and cut into leaves before processing. The oaks are not felled and only about half of the bark is removed at any one time. Cork oaks are first harvested at the age of 25 and take place every 9 years. After the third harvest, the bark is of sufficient quality to make wine corks.
