A transportation management system (TMS) is a subset of supply chain management related to transportation processes and can be part of an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system. A TMS usually "sits" between an ERP or legacy order processing and warehouse / sales module. A typical scenario includes both incoming (procurement) and outgoing (shipping) orders, which are evaluated by the TMS planning module and offer the user various suggested routing solutions.

As ERP vendors improve their local transportation management offerings by adding TMS modules to their existing, deployed base, the advent of software-as-a-service or "SaaS" delivery has led to a surge in emerging TMS vendors.
