Photovoltaic modules use light energy (photons) from the Sun to generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect. Most modules use wafer-based crystalline silicon cells or thin film cells. The structural member (load bearing) of a module can be the top layer or the back layer. The cells must be protected from mechanical damage and moisture. Most of the modules are rigid, but semi-flexible based on thin film cells are also available. The cells are electrically connected in series, with each other at the desired voltage, and then in parallel to increase amperage. The module wattage is the mathematical product of the module's voltage and amperage. The manufacturing specifications of the solar panels are obtained under standard conditions that are not the actual operating conditions to which the solar panels are exposed at the installation site.

A photovoltaic junction box is attached to the back of the solar panel and functions as its output interface. External connections for most PV modules use MC4 connectors to facilitate weatherproof connections to the rest of the system. A USB power interface can also be used.
