In the mid-1850s, operating rooms with windows in the ceiling were built to the southeast to take advantage of natural sunlight as much as possible. The biggest problem was the dependence of the lighting and whether an intervention could be carried out on the time of day and the weather conditions. In addition, a doctor, nurse, or medical device easily blocked the light. Using mirrors on the four corners of the ceiling to reflect sunlight back towards the operating table only slightly alleviated these problems.

Attempts have been made to use an optical condenser in indirect light to reduce heating, but to no avail. The entry of electric light into the operating room in the 1880s was fraught with problems. With early electrical engineering, control of the light emitted was poor. Electric light was still moving and diffuse with great heat radiation. Light-emitting diodes as light sources eliminate the problem of thermal radiation and reduce energy requirements.
