A wireless repeater (also known as a wireless range extender) is a device that takes an existing signal from a wireless router or wireless access point and retransmits it to create a second network. When two or more hosts need to be connected using the IEEE 802.11 protocol and the distance is too great to connect directly, a wireless repeater is used to fill the gap. It can be a special stand-alone computer network device. Some WNICs (Wireless Network Interface Controllers) optionally support operation in such a mode.
