Aquaculture (less often spelled aquiculture), also known as aquafarming, is the breeding of fish, crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants, algae and other organisms. Aquaculture involves the cultivation of freshwater and saltwater populations under controlled conditions and is in contrast to commercial fishing, where wild fish are harvested. Mariculture, commonly known as marine agriculture, refers to aquaculture that is practiced in marine environments and in underwater habitats.

Some forms of aquaculture, such as seaweed farming, have the opportunity to be part of climate protection, while other forms of aquaculture have negative effects on the environment, for example through nutrient pollution or disease transmission to wild populations.
