Some other species in the genus Linum look similar to L. usitatissimum, cultivated flax, including some with similar blue flowers and others with white, yellow, or red flowers. Some of these are perennial, as opposed to L. usitatissimum, which is an annual. Cultivated flax plants reach heights of 1.2 m and have slender stems. The leaves are glassy green, slenderly lanceolate, 20–40 mm long and 3 mm wide.

The flowers are light blue, 15-25 mm in diameter, with five petals. The fruit is a round, dry capsule 5 to 9 mm in diameter that contains several shiny brown seeds that are shaped like an apple pip and are 4 to 7 mm long.
