The Incredible Growth of Military Laser Designator Industry

A laser identifier is a laser light source used to designate a target. Laser identifiers target laser-guided bombs, missiles or precision artillery ammunition such as guns. B. the Paveway bomb series, AGM-114 Hellfire or the M712 Copperhead cartridge.

When a target is marked by an identifier, the ray is invisible and does not seem continuous. Instead, a series of encoded laser light pulses is fired. These signals bounce off the target into the sky, where they are captured by the seeker on the laser-guided ammunition, which is directed towards the center of the reflected signal. If the targets do not have laser detection equipment or can hear aircraft overhead, it is extremely difficult for them to determine if they are tagged. Laser markers work best in clear atmospheric conditions. Cloud cover, rain, or smoke can make it difficult or impossible to reliably determine targets unless a simulation is accessible using available ground data.

The US Air Force selected the Lockheed Martin Sniper Advanced Targeting Pod (ATP) in 2004. He equipped several USAF platforms such as the F-16, F-15E, B-1, B-52 and A-10C. It also works on several international hunting platforms. The U.S. Navy is currently deploying LITENING and ATFLIR target shells in a variety of strike aircraft. The Litening II is widely used by many other air forces around the world. The British Royal Air Force uses the Litening III system and the French use Damocles and ATLIS II.
