Complete Growth Overview on Onshore Drilling Industry

Offshore drilling is a mechanical process of drilling a borehole below the sea floor. It is typically done to explore and subsequently extract petroleum that resides in rock formations below the ocean floor. Most commonly, the term is used to describe drilling activities on the continental shelf, although the term can also be used to refer to drilling in lakes, coastal waters, and inland seas.

Offshore drilling challenges both the offshore and onshore environmental problems of the hydrocarbons produced and the materials used during the drilling process. One of the controversies is the ongoing debate over offshore drilling in the US. There are many different types of facilities from which offshore drilling is performed.

These include ground-based drilling rigs (jack-up and swamp ships), combined drilling and production systems for ground-based or floating platforms and mobile deep-sea offshore drilling units (MODU) including semi-submersible boats and drilling ships. These can be operated in water depths of up to 3,000 meters. In shallower waters, the mobile units are anchored to the seabed, but in deeper waters (more than 1,500 meters) the semi-submersible boats or drilling vessels are held at the required drilling location with the help of dynamic positioning.
