The history of social casework is closely related to the emergence of social work as a general professional discipline. In the late nineteenth century, the establishment of the Charity Organization Society and Settlement Movement began efforts to combat industrial poverty. While social casework was a primary method of intervention, it was not until Mary Richmond published the Social Diagnosis in 1917 that a formal definition of social casework began to be formulated. In the Social Diagnosis, Richmond advocated working with, rather than working with, clients and "gaining an understanding understanding of the ancient world that the client came from" rather than making generalizations or assumptions. The term social diagnosis referred to "a systematic way to help professionals gather information and investigate customer problems" based on each customer's individual background, problems, and needs.

Social casework is the method that social workers use to help individuals find solutions to social adjustment problems that are difficult for individuals to navigate on their own. Social casework is a primary approach and method of social work that is concerned with the adjustment and development of individuals, and in some cases couples, towards more satisfactory human relationships. In social casework, the relationship between a caseworker and his client is one of the supports aimed at "enabling a person to solve a problem through self-effort".
