Current and Future Analysis of Commercial Genset Industry

A diesel generator (DG) (also known as a diesel generator set) is the combination of a diesel engine with an electrical generator (often an alternator) to generate electrical energy. This is a special case of a motor generator. A diesel compression ignition engine is usually designed to run on diesel fuel, but some types are suitable for other liquid fuels or natural gas.

Atlas Copco, Briggs & Stratton, LLC, Caterpillar Inc., Cummins Inc., Generac Power Systems, Inc., JCB, Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited (KOEL), Kohler Co., mtu solutions (Rolls-Royce Power Systems AG), Yanmar Holdings Co., Ltd.

Diesel generators are used in locations without a grid connection or as an emergency power supply in the event of a power failure, as well as for more complex applications such as peak lopping, grid support and export to the power grid.

Properly dimensioning diesel generators is critical to avoid low load or underperformance. The dimensioning is made more difficult by the properties of modern electronics, especially non-linear loads. In size ranges of 50 MW and more, an open-loop gas turbine at full load is more efficient than a range of diesel engines and far more compact at a comparable cost of capital. For regular partial charging, diesel arrays are sometimes preferred to open-cycle gas turbines because of their superior efficiencies, even at these power levels.
