Paper recycling is the process by which waste paper is turned into new paper products. It has a number of important advantages: It saves waste paper by occupying people's homes and producing methane when it is broken down. Because paper fibers contain carbon (which was originally absorbed by the tree it was made from), recycling keeps the carbon longer and trapped outside the atmosphere. Around two-thirds of all paper products in the US are now recovered and recycled, although not all of them are made from new paper.

After repeated processing, the fibers become too short for the production of new paper - this is why fresh fibers (from sustainably grown trees) are often added to the pulp recipe.
