A solar charger is a charger that uses solar energy to power devices or batteries. They are usually portable. Solar chargers can charge lead-acid or Ni-Cd battery banks with a capacity of up to 48 V and hundreds of ampere-hours (up to 4000 Ah). Such types of solar chargers generally use a smart charge controller. A number of solar cells are installed in a stationary location (e.g. roofs of houses, base station locations on the ground, etc.) and can be connected to a battery bank to store energy for off-peak operation. They can also be used in addition to mains chargers to save energy during the day.

The other type of portable solar chargers are those with wheels that allow them to be transported from one place to another and used by many people. They are semi-public considering that they are used publicly but not permanently installed.

This, in turn, has made it difficult for new solar charging companies to gain consumer confidence. Solar companies are now offering highly efficient solar chargers. In developing countries, portable solar energy is used for lighting, as opposed to the use of kerosene lamps, which are responsible for respiratory infections, lung and throat cancers, serious eye infections, cataracts, and low birth weights. Solar energy offers rural areas the opportunity to "skip" the traditional grid infrastructure and switch directly to distributed energy solutions.
