Photovoltaic mounting systems (also known as solar panel shelves) are used to mount solar panels on surfaces such as roofs, building facades, or the floor. These mounting systems generally allow retrofitting of solar panels on roofs or as part of the building structure (called BIPV).

The solar system of a PV system can be mounted on roofs, generally with a distance of a few centimeters and parallel to the roof surface. When the roof is horizontal, the array is mounted so that each panel is oriented at an angle. If the panels are to be assembled prior to the construction of the roof, the roof can be designed accordingly by installing support brackets for the panels before installing the roofing materials. The installation of the solar panels can be done by the crew responsible for installing the roof. If the roof is already built, it is relatively easy to retrofit panels directly onto existing roof structures.

For a small minority of roofs (often non-code built) that are designed to only support the weight of the roof, the installation of solar panels requires that the roof structure be reinforced in advance. In all cases of retrofitting, special consideration must be given to the weather seal. There are many lightweight designs for PV systems that can be used on either pitched or flat roofs (e.g., plastic wedges or the PV pod). Most, however, depend on some type of extruded aluminum rails (e.g. Unirac). Recently, voltage-based PV shelf solutions that reduce weight and cost have been successfully tested.
