Runkeeper tracks fitness activities such as walking, running, and cycling using the device's GPS sensor. Once an activity is complete, Runkeeper provides basic statistics on that activity. Runkeeper offers a runkeeper challenge at regular intervals, in which the defined training must be completed within the time limit.

Runkeeper offers a premium subscription to Runkeeper Go, which includes more detailed statistics on activities, performance comparisons and training plans. In May 2016, the Norwegian Consumer Council was made aware of the Runkeeper software for violating European data protection laws. It claims that it will continue to track the user's locations after the application has ended and that this information will be shared with advertisers in a manner beyond the limits of the application's terms of use.
