A smartwatch is a wearable computer in the shape of a watch. Modern smartwatches offer a local touchscreen interface for daily use, while an associated smartphone app takes care of administration and telemetry (e.g. long-term biomonitoring). While early models could perform basic tasks like calculating, digitally telling the time, translating, and playing games, smartwatches from 2010 have more general features closer to smartphones, including mobile apps, a mobile operating system, and WiFi / Bluetooth connectivity. Some smartwatches act as portable media players with FM radio and playback of digital audio and video files through a Bluetooth headset. Some models, called quatch phones (or vice versa), have cellular cellular capabilities such as making calls.

Like other computers, a smart watch can collect information from internal or external sensors and control or retrieve data from other instruments or computers. Wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS may be supported. For many purposes, a "surveillance computer" serves as the front end to a remote system such as a smartphone that communicates with the smartphone using various wireless technologies.
