Application Service Management (ASM) is an emerging systems management discipline that focuses on monitoring and managing the performance and quality of service of business transactions. ASM can be defined as a well-defined process that uses related tools to discover, diagnose, troubleshoot, and report the quality of service of complex business transactions to ensure they meet or exceed end-user performance measurements. This depends on how quickly transactions are completed or information is provided to the end user through the composition of applications, operating systems, hypervisors (if applicable), hardware platforms and network connections. ASM refers to Application Performance Management (APM), but serves as a more pragmatic "top-down" approach that focuses on delivering business services. Strictly defined, ASM differs from APM in two critical ways.

APM focuses solely on the performance of one instance of an application and ignores the complex dependencies that may exist behind that application in the data center. ASM expressly stipulates that every application or infrastructure software, every operating system, every hardware platform and every transaction hop must be discretely measurable, even if this measurement is inferential. This is critical to ASM's requirement to isolate the cause of conditions affecting the service.

APM often requires instrumentation of the application for management and measurability. ASM advocates an application-centric approach, claiming that the application and operating system have a comprehensive view of an application's transactions, dependencies on or off the computer, as well as the operating system itself and the hardware platform on which it is running. In addition, an in-context agent can also infer network latencies with a high degree of accuracy and with a lower degree of accuracy when the transaction is between instrumented and non-instrumented platforms.

Application service management extends the concepts of end-user experience management and real-world monitoring so that measuring real-world experience is a critical data point. However, ASM also requires the ability to quickly isolate the root cause of these slowdowns, which increases the amount of monitoring / management by real users.
