Paper towels are provided through a dispenser in commercial or office bathrooms to allow users to dry their hands. In households, they are used for smaller, precise or particularly dirty jobs such as wiping, cleaning and drying. According to archaeological studies of the Middle Ages, "the ubiquitous knife and towel were among the closely held personal items". However, the invention of the towel is often associated with the Turkish city of Bursa in the 17th century.

These Turkish towels started out as a flat, woven piece of cotton or linen called a pestamel, which was often hand embroidered. The pestamell was long enough to wrap around the body, was originally quite narrow, but is now wider and usually measures 90 by 170 centimeters. Pestamel was used in Turkish baths because it remained light when wet and was very absorbent.
